Breathing retrainer for snorers

Hi, I’m Jane Tarrant. Your Breathing Retrainer & Healthy Breathing Educator

Why does snoring happen?

Snoring is noisy breathing whilst asleep. These are the most common reasons for snoring to occur:

1️⃣ - The tongue does not remain in position and falls back into the throat, blocking the airway. Tongue tie can prevent correct tongue position.

2️⃣ - The airflow is too fast, hard & shallow (known as over-breathing), due to degraded breathing habits during the day over a period of time.

3️⃣ - The airway is too small, often due to being untoned & vibrates or collapses, especially when added weight gain or fast, hard breathing occurs. Airway size can also be reduced through mouth breathing habits as a child.

These snoring issues occur due to lack of healthy breathing education from childhood. It is not normal or healthy to snore, although sadly very common. It is something that should be addressed as young as possible.

Which snoring devices actually work?

Snoring is a spectrum. One or more things can cause it. This is why snoring devices work for some, but not others.

1️⃣ - The tongue can’t be trained via a device, but mouth tape can be used to ensure the mouth is kept shut. I only recommend this once you’ve trained to use it because those who over-breathe may find it scary without preparing. Although I tape my mouth at night, I had to train my tongue, CO2 tolerance and belief in my body first.

2️⃣ - The airflow can be improved for some by nasal strips if nasal size is the only issue. They are even used by athletes, but it is only part of the airflow issue. Sometimes unseen internal obstructions can cause ongoing issues, but for many people it comes from poor breathing habits (including tongue posture) and a lack of knowledge on how to decongest.

3️⃣ - For sleep apnoea (breathing which stops for a number of seconds), the medical industry often supply CPAP machines which force open the airway regularly. It concerns me that there seems to be no conversation around retraining tongue position, toning airways and retraining airflow or breathing muscles. My opinion is that a CPAP might be your best option, but I wouldn’t accept it as the only solution without putting the effort in to optimise your own body.

Again, these snoring issues occur due to lack of healthy breathing education from childhood. It is not normal or healthy to snore or have sleep apnoea, although sadly very common. It is something that should be addressed as young as possible. For children, a myofunctional orthodontist would be a good professional to seek advice from also.

Hi, I’m Jane Tarrant. Your Breathing Retrainer & Healthy Breathing Educator

This is how the Zoom calls usually go:

1️⃣ - A bit of history about you, your situation and how you are feeling

2️⃣ - A breathing assessment (preferably with a bit of a giggle)

3️⃣ - Education around the difference between your current breathing habits and what I retrain to

4️⃣ - If you then want any details about how to potentially work together, I tell you. Premium & affordable options.

Common breathing assessment questions for snorers

1️⃣ - Do I have to remove any clothing?

No, all I ask you to do is place your hands on your upper chest and across your belly, then around your side ribs and to your face. I can see everything using your hands.

2️⃣ - Can you really assess breathing over Zoom?

Yes, I’m highly tuned to see what you might not even feel at first. I just ask you to stand behind your chair or move the screen back so I can see from your nose to your belt buckle.

3️⃣ - Do you diagnose?

No, I don’t diagnose as I am not qualified to do so. I do however make you aware of what your breathing habits are showing and educate you around what you can do to improve them.

4️⃣ - Do I have to work with you if I have a call?

No, you don’t have to work with me for your breathing retraining. I am here to help you decide if breathing retraining would benefit you. If you want to coast around, reading various education online to decide what to do, you are welcome to. I actively encourage self education. If you want to be hand held through an 8 week process, which is designed to be easy to implement whilst retraining your habits, I’m the person to jump on board with. As long as you click with me of course. My specialty is working with those with busy brains and busy lives. I am compassionate but help hold you accountable in the way you want me to.

Why did Jane Tarrant become a Breathing Retrainer for snorers?

Aged 7, I was sat on my bedroom floor thinking, “my nose is too small. I can’t breathe through it properly. But surely if that was a problem, someone would have told me.“

It took me 23 more years to learn that I could retrain my nose and my unhealthy breathing habits, including my snoring (which I’d experienced since a child). This sparked my passion to fill the education void that is somewhere between breathing science experts who don’t educate in a simple, accessible way, and the general public who know nothing. I’ve had the honour of working with a number of people displaying a range of unhealthy breathing symptoms.
